The United States and Denmark have reached a deal regarding the security of Greenland, an agreement set to be signed at the United Nations General Assembly next week. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the development, stating that the pact strengthens common security across the Arctic and North Atlantic while simultaneously recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. Furthermore, she noted that the deal respects the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination and acknowledges the island's role in international cooperation.
Former President Donald Trump, who had previously sought to purchase or annex the mineral-rich territory, claimed the agreement grants the United States permanent control over security and other needs. According to Trump, the deal includes provisions that prohibit any US adversary from maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without express written approval. The agreement also bans non-Nato countries from building bases on the island. An official noted that the deal specifically aims to block Russia and China from deploying troops or investing in sensitive sectors, which had previously lacked adequate screening.
Greenland, which holds vast and largely untapped reserves of rare earth minerals essential for technologies like mobile phones and electric vehicles, is considered vital to Trump's proposed Golden Dome defence system. This system is intended to protect the US against potential missile attacks from Russia and China, with the possibility of European allies cooperating in the effort. The United States currently maintains more than 100 military personnel at its Pituffik base in the territory's north-western region. While the official text of the agreement has not yet been released, both the White House and the Danish Embassy were contacted for comment regarding the implications of the deal.
