Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Maine, has officially suspended his campaign following serious allegations of sexual assault. The withdrawal of the oysterman and military veteran creates significant uncertainty for a 2026 midterm race that Democrats had identified as a critical opportunity to flip a Republican-held seat.
The decision to step down followed a report by Politico detailing an accusation from Jenny Racicot, a woman who previously dated Platner. Racicot alleges that in 2021, while the two were in a relationship, Platner entered her home without permission and raped her while intoxicated. In an interview with CNN, Racicot stated that the incident was something she had attempted to forget for many years. Platner denied the allegation in a social media video released on Wednesday, though he confirmed his intention to exit the race.
Following the emergence of the claim, several prominent Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders, withdrew their support for his candidacy. Platner’s campaign had previously been marked by controversy, including media scrutiny over past Reddit posts that appeared to endorse political violence and a “Totenkopf” skull-and-crossbones chest tattoo. Platner had apologized for the posts and explained that the tattoo, which is associated with Nazi aesthetics, was acquired years ago during military leave while he was intoxicated. Despite these earlier issues, he maintained support by focusing on his experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol abuse following his service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Platner had previously energized progressives by running as an outsider focused on economic inequality, successfully defeating the Democratic establishment’s preferred candidate, Governor Janet Mills, in the June primary. His exit now forces Maine Democratic leaders to scramble to select a new candidate before a July 27 deadline. The selection process is expected to potentially reignite internal tensions between the party’s moderate and progressive factions.
Maine remains a must-win state for Democrats, who are looking to secure a Senate majority to obstruct President Donald Trump’s agenda. While the state voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, it is currently represented by Republican Senator Susan Collins. Although Collins has occasionally distanced herself from Trump, Democrats argue she has largely supported his policy agenda.
