The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms across multiple regions of the United Kingdom, cautioning that heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding, power outages, and significant travel disruptions. These warnings come after an exceptionally dry period lasting nearly two months, with some parts of the country experiencing their very first rainfall in weeks on Tuesday.
The sudden shift in weather patterns is expected to bring lightning, hail, and thunder to the affected areas.
Northern Ireland from 12:00 until 23:59 BST on WednesdayParts of North East Scotland, including Aberdeen, from 14:00 until 21:00 on WednesdayParts of the North of England, including Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne, from 19:00 on Wednesday until 10:00 on ThursdayForecasters predict that up to 30mm of rain could fall within just a few hours in parts of Northern Ireland and North East Scotland.
In northern England, the downpours could be even more intense, with up to 50mm of rain projected to fall within a six-hour period.
Already on Wednesday, much of the UK has experienced a combination of sunshine and scattered showers. The changing weather has already disrupted major events; in Leeds, play was temporarily halted on day one of the first men's cricket test match between England and Pakistan, forcing spectators to seek shelter from the rain.
The rainfall has broken historic dry spells in several locations. In Wisley, Surrey, a remarkable 62-day dry run finally came to an end on Wednesday morning after 1.6mm of rain fell before 10:00. This summer is currently projected to be the hottest on record for the UK, which has already experienced five distinct heatwaves.
July 2026 marked the driest July on record for England and Wales, while southern England recorded its driest month ever in records that date back to 1836.
Currently, drought officials have declared 71.3% of England to be in a state of drought, and parts of eastern Scotland are dealing with significant water scarcity. While the arrival of rain offers some relief, the Environment Agency has warned that "sustained and significant rainfall" will be necessary to truly alleviate the ongoing drought.
Experts also warn that the heavy showers pose an immediate risk of flash flooding. Because the ground has become extremely hard and compacted over the dry summer, it has become water repellent, which increases surface runoff rather than allowing the water to absorb.
The meteorological shift is caused by high pressure giving way to low pressure for the remainder of the week, which will make rainfall much more widespread, though highly uneven in its distribution. Temperatures are also set to decline nationwide. Wednesday is expected to be the first day since June 29 where maximum temperatures fail to reach 25°C (77°F).
This cooling trend will continue into Thursday and Friday, bringing daytime temperatures back to, or slightly below, the seasonal average, alongside noticeably chillier nights.
On Wednesday, the heaviest and most thundery scattered showers are concentrated in the north of the UK, particularly across Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland, and northern England. By Thursday, the focus of these slow-moving and potentially thundery downpours will drift southward, bringing the highest chance of significant rainfall to parts of northern England, the Midlands, Lincolnshire, East Anglia, and potentially southeast England.
Rainfall totals will vary significantly over short distances, with some localized spots receiving 20-30mm or more, while neighboring areas could see very little or miss the rain entirely.
The Met Office may issue additional weather warnings for parts of England and Wales as the heavy, thundery conditions persist through Thursday and Friday. However, these showers will not lead to the lifting of hosepipe bans, which currently affect more than 20 million people across the UK.
Water companies have emphasized that prolonged, steady rainfall is required to restore water levels, replenish parched soils, and allow browned, parched landscapes to return to green.
