US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Friday, stating that the United States would “completely decimate” Iran if it attempted or succeeded in assassinating him. Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that 1,000 missiles are “locked and loaded” and aimed at the Islamic Republic, with thousands more prepared to follow should the Iranian government act on its alleged threats. He further stated that the US military has received orders and is prepared to destroy all areas of Iran for a one-year period, a duration subject to extension.
This escalation comes amid reports from US media on Thursday that Israel shared intelligence with Washington regarding a specific plan by Iran to target the US president. Despite these tensions, Trump noted that he had agreed to further negotiations with Iran, even while maintaining his assertion that the existing ceasefire between the two nations is effectively over. The current diplomatic landscape is marked by a new low in relations, as a recent exchange of fire has threatened to return the region to full-scale war.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported an explosion in the eastern part of Tehran province, though the exact source and location remained unclear, with residents of Pakdasht and Qiyamdasht reporting the sound. Iran has insisted it has “kept its word” regarding the ceasefire agreement. In the northeast city of Mashhad, where the funeral for the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei was recently held, an attack resulted in the deaths of two members of the Basij forces, a paramilitary group affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards. The Tasnim news agency reported that the perpetrators of this incident would be punished.
Diplomatic efforts are currently underway to salvage the fragile peace process. A Qatari delegation travelled to Iran on Friday to meet with officials in an effort to de-escalate tensions and facilitate broader negotiations, with these talks reportedly conducted in coordination with the United States. Tehran’s top diplomat is also travelling to Oman as part of these efforts, even as the region remains on edge following the burial of Ali Khamenei, which occurred more than four months after he was killed in an airstrike.

An exchange of fire this week rocked an already fragile agreement that was supposed to help pave the way for a permanent end to the conflict, which broke out in late February with massive US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
