President Donald Trump has publicly challenged a finding by his own Department of Justice regarding damage discovered at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. The department recently determined that the damage was the result of a rushed installation process carried out by a contractor ahead of the America 250 celebrations, which took place around Independence Day 2026. However, the President has rejected this official assessment.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump criticized his hand-picked U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, stating, "I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro," and adding, "I don’t know what she was thinking?" To support his stance, the President shared security camera footage of individuals he identified as culprits, accusing them of using "a knife or a box cutter, for all to see" to damage the newly installed lining of the monument.
This dispute follows a court filing on Friday, July 31, in which the Department of Justice officially dropped federal charges against former Olympian David Hearn. The department had previously alleged that Hearn was responsible for more than $1,000 in damages to the federal property. In contrast to the President's claims of vandalism, the court filing from Pirro's office attributed the damage to "flawed installation by the contractor" exacerbated by the urgency to finish the project for the nation's 250th birthday events.
The renovations to the reflecting pool are just one of Trump's projects in line with his "beautification" plans for the nation's capital. In early June, Trump had celebrated the application of new dark blue paint to the pool's floor and outlined plans to fill it with "CLEAN, BEAUTIFUL WATER." When reports emerged later that month indicating the new lining was peeling and algae had begun to grow, the President initially blamed "SICK, DERANGED PEOPLE!" for vandalizing the site. Despite the subsequent Department of Justice filing citing faulty construction, the President continues to maintain his original allegations of vandalism.
