Trump Announces Major Oil and Mineral Exploration in Greenland

US President Donald Trump has announced that plans for major oil, gas, and mineral exploration are currently underway in Greenland. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, the President claimed that the Arctic island holds vast, easily accessible oil resources, a statement made as global energy prices remain elevated. While Trump suggested that some experts consider Greenland to possess some of the world's largest easily accessible oil reserves, he did not provide evidence to support this claim or offer specific details regarding the planned exploration activities.

Beyond the energy potential, Trump described Greenland as vital to the defense of the United States and Europe against future threats. He asserted that the island's geographic location would allow American forces to detect and intercept incoming dangers, stating that any future attack on the US would have to pass through Greenland. According to the President, the island provides unique advantages in terms of time, location, and sightlines, which would enable US forces to neutralize drones, missiles, or other weapons not yet conceived. He characterized the island as "second to none" for security purposes.

These remarks follow a September agreement between Washington, Denmark, and Greenland to expand the US military presence on the island, including the establishment of additional bases and the deployment of missile defense capabilities. Although Trump referred to the territory as "our new" Greenland, the island remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The recent agreement formally recognizes Danish sovereignty and the right of Greenlanders to self-determination. Notably, Greenland ceased issuing new oil and gas exploration licenses in 2021 due to climate and environmental concerns, although licenses granted prior to that decision remain valid.
