Troy Aikman has addressed concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest stemming from his role as an organizational advisor and consultant for the Miami Dolphins. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst assured that he has discussed the arrangement directly with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. According to Aikman, the commissioner expressed no concerns regarding his dual responsibilities.
Speaking on the "Dallas Dialogue" podcast hosted by retired WFAA newscaster Dale Hansen, Aikman clarified the nature of his involvement with the Dolphins. He noted that the team is currently navigating salary cap challenges involving 90,000,000 dollars and is not expected to be highly competitive this season, which effectively eliminates the possibility of the Dolphins appearing in any Monday Night Football broadcasts he calls. Aikman emphasized that he serves as a resource for the organization without holding an official title.
The discussion regarding potential conflicts of interest has gained momentum in the league, particularly with similar scrutiny surrounding Tom Brady’s minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders during his tenure at Fox. Despite these broader conversations about analysts having ties to teams, Aikman remains confident in his current standing with the league office. He stated, "I’ve talked to the commissioner, and he’s fine with what I’m doing and my role."
Regarding his future at ESPN, Aikman indicated that he has no immediate plans to leave his broadcasting career as he enters the final year of his contract. While he admitted that his current workload does not allow him to dedicate more time to the Dolphins, he did not rule out the possibility of taking on a more involved role with an NFL team once he eventually decides to step away from his broadcasting duties.
