Philippine authorities have identified Thomas Markle Jr, the estranged half-brother of the Duchess of Sussex, as a person of interest in an ongoing inquiry into child sexual abuse imagery. The investigation originally centered on allegations made against his father, Thomas Markle Sr, who previously resided in the Philippines.

Jonvic Remulla, the Philippine interior and local government secretary, announced the development during a press conference in Manila. Remulla stated that while the 60-year-old Markle Jr is not currently being treated as a suspect, there are "signs that point that the son is involved in the crime as well." He indicated that further clarity on the matter is expected within the coming days.

The inquiry stems from the discovery of more than 7,000 photos and a video featuring under-age males and females of Asian, Latin, and European descent, with some victims as young as 10 and 11. Remulla characterized the collection as "the most deplorable displays of impunity towards sexual activity that I have ever seen." Markle Jr had originally alerted local police and the FBI to the existence of these images after claiming to have found four storage boxes filled with them among his father’s belongings. Authorities have clarified that his current status as a person of interest is not believed to be directly linked to the specific materials he provided to law enforcement.

Markle Sr, 82, returned to the United States in May and is reportedly living in a care home for dementia patients. While he has admitted to paying for sex while in the Philippines, he has strongly denied the possession of child abuse imagery, suggesting he was "set up." Remulla has previously referred to the elder Markle as "a possible sex offender of the grossest kind." Investigators from the FBI and local police are currently examining whether the elder Markle held illegal imagery while residing in the Philippines and Mexico.

Markle Jr, who remains in Cebu City, was recently interviewed via a multi-agency Microsoft Teams meeting by an FBI agent based in Florida. Following the initial emergence of allegations against her father, the Duchess of Sussex issued a statement expressing that she was "deeply distressed." She noted that she had been informed of disturbing claims in 2018 and had subsequently kept her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, from contact with her father to ensure their protection.
