Ahead of the two-match Test series against Australia, Bangladesh pace bowler Taskin Ahmed shared his concerns on Monday, August 10, regarding the team's depleted fast-bowling ranks. Taskin noted that the tourists will significantly miss Nahid Rana, whom he described as a major threat in modern world cricket, suggesting that the speedster could have been a decisive factor against the hosts.
The Bangladesh squad has faced a difficult buildup to the series, with Nahid Rana ruled out due to a side strain. Compounding these challenges, fellow pacer Shoriful Islam has been sidelined for the first Test with a hamstring injury, with his availability for the second match remaining subject to a fitness evaluation. Despite these setbacks, Taskin expressed optimism, stating that the current situation provides a unique opportunity for other bowlers to step up and make their mark while playing in Australian conditions.
Reflecting on their previous success, Taskin drew confidence from the ODI series win over Australia earlier this year, which was played on sporting wickets rather than the traditional slow, turning tracks often found in Mirpur. While acknowledging that there is a distinct difference between home and away matches, he believes that previous victory provides the team with a psychological boost.
Regarding the team's preparation, Taskin addressed the recent innings-and-38-run defeat to the Cricket Australia XI. While admitting the result was disappointing, he emphasized that the team gained valuable experience from the fixture as they continue to adjust to local conditions and pitch behavior. Looking ahead to the main matches, Taskin dismissed concerns about over-planning for individual players, including Travis Head. While acknowledging Head as one of the world's best batters, Taskin stated that he intends to stick to his personal process. He emphasized that the team will prepare specific plans for every batter but noted that success will ultimately depend on execution on the ground and playing a high standard of cricket to remain competitive.
“It won't be easy, but still I can't do anything more than that. I'll stick to my process, and let's see how it goes. It depends on the condition and how the pitch is behaving. But still definitely, we will come with a plan for every batter, it totally depends on the execution, how we execute on the ground. And also, we have to play really good cricket to compete with them,” he concluded.
