Spain is set to host its most distinguished honors ceremony, the Princess of Asturias Awards, on Friday, October 23, 2026. Held annually in the northern city of Oviedo—the capital of Asturias—these awards represent the highest accolade the country grants to individuals who have achieved significant impact within their respective fields.
This year’s list of recipients highlights a diverse group of international figures. The honorees include football star Leo Messi, American singer-songwriter Patti Smith, the Japanese animation collective Studio Ghibli, British historian Timothy Garton Ash, and NASA astronaut Christina Koch.
The event is organized by the Princess of Asturias Foundation. Currently, 20-year-old Princess Leonor serves as the chair of the foundation, a role that involves delivering the keynote speech and overseeing the distribution of the awards. Princess Leonor assumed these responsibilities in 2014, taking over the position from her father, King Felipe IV, at the age of 13. Prior to this transition, the event was known as the Prince of Asturias Awards, reflecting the title historically held by the heir to the Spanish throne.
While the ceremony is deeply associated with the Spanish royal family, the awards were not originally conceived by the monarchy. The location of the ceremony in Oviedo is significant as it aligns with the title held by the royal heir, much like the British tradition of naming the heir the Prince or Princess of Wales.
Here's everything you need to know about these awards, from how much money the recipients receive to who came up with the idea.
