Donald Trump Jr and his wife, Bettina Anderson, have confirmed that a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin provided financial support for their wedding festivities held in May. The revelation follows a report by ProPublica detailing that Umar Kremlev, a prominent member of the Russian president’s inner circle, contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the three-day celebration, which took place across two private islands. The event, which was described as lavish, included the rental of an island for the reception and guest accommodations, as well as a large fireworks display.
In a statement signed by the couple and shared on Bettina Trump’s Instagram, they acknowledged the contributions, describing them as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.” The couple further clarified that they were married privately on 22 May, surrounded only by family, and that the Russian businessman hosted two nights of celebrations following the ceremony. They emphasized that their friendship lacks a political motive, asserting that “generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
Kremlev, who serves as the head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), has been a subject of scrutiny due to his long-standing relationship with Vladimir Putin. According to reports, the wedding payments were funneled through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai that the boxing association uses for financial transactions. Kremlev’s ties to the Kremlin are well-documented; he recently received the Order of Friendship from the Russian president and was part of a delegation accompanying Putin to China shortly before the wedding. The Ukrainian government has since placed sanctions on him, citing his proximity to Russian security services. Additionally, Alexander Lagutin, a businessperson with senior roles at a Russian defense contractor and a state-backed energy company, was with Kremlev on the China trip, while Kremlev’s right-hand at the IBA, Elena Sobol, attended the wedding.
The guest list for the event included approximately 50 people, mostly consisting of close friends, business associates, and family. While Kremlev reportedly did not attend the 18-person ceremony, he was present at the party with a large group of Russians, which reportedly caused confusion among other guests, as the group sometimes stood off by themselves speaking Russian. This level of involvement has prompted sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers. Robert Garcia, the ranking member and lead Democrat on the House oversight committee, questioned the nature of the relationship on social media, stating, “Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas? What did he get in return? We need answers.”
Ethics experts have also weighed in on the implications of such a gift. Donald Sherman, president and CEO of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (Crew), argued that the public interest demands that Congress consider requiring financial disclosure statements of a president’s adult children. He noted that the context of such gifts is critical, particularly when foreign figures seek favor with the president’s family. Retired FBI official Frank Montoya Jr expressed similar concerns, stating, “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something. This should be unthinkable for the son of the president.”
Responding to inquiries, a spokesperson for Trump Jr stated that Kremlev is a “personal friend” and not a business associate, noting that the two men met through a mutual contact in the hunting community. US President Donald Trump did not attend the event, telling reporters a few days before the nuptials that it was not good timing for him due to “a thing called Iran and other things.”
