A series of Russian strikes targeting Ukraine's capital resulted in the deaths of at least four people and left more than a dozen others wounded, according to local officials on Saturday. The assault followed an urgent warning from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who alerted residents to a ballistic missile attack and urged them to seek shelter immediately. Journalists from Agence France-Presse reported hearing more than 10 consecutive explosions, which were powerful enough to trigger car alarms throughout the city streets.
Kyiv's military administration confirmed the four fatalities, while Mayor Klitschko stated that 15 people, including two boys aged 13 and 17, required hospitalization. This incident follows a particularly violent week; on Thursday, a barrage of Russian drones and ballistic missiles across the country killed at least eight civilians, including children, and wounded dozens more. The United Nations recently identified June as the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022 as Moscow intensifies its long-range targeting of towns and cities.
In response to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly four-and-a-half years, Ukraine has ramped up its own retaliatory strikes against Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. President Vladimir Putin acknowledged in June that these Ukrainian operations were causing difficulties for Russia, noting that while they were experiencing certain shortages, they were not yet critical. Kyiv has also accused a major e-commerce firm of facilitating the Russian military by storing drone parts, a claim that highlights the economic scope of the war.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue alongside the fighting. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Trump this week to discuss the production of Patriot missile interceptors, which are considered vital for Ukraine's defense. The two leaders previously met earlier this month at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Turkey, where it was announced that the United States would permit Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot missiles.
