In a video released by the Kremlin, Putin stated his appreciation for the support provided to Russia's "special military operation." He further remarked that the "heroic deeds" of North Korean soldiers would be remembered and honored alongside those of Russian compatriots, while also praising the mutual understanding he has cultivated with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The diplomatic visit follows an invitation extended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to Russia's foreign ministry. The relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang has significantly intensified since Russia initiated its full-scale offensive in 2022. Reports indicate that North Korea has provided weapon systems and deployed troops to Russia's Kursk region to assist in the war effort.
In exchange, analysts note that North Korea—a country characterized by its isolation and economic struggles—has received various forms of aid from Moscow, including food, energy supplies, financial assistance, and military technology. During a visit to Pyongyang by senior Russian officials in late April, Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to the partnership, pledging to assist Moscow in achieving victory in what he described as a "sacred war."
