Democratic Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola addressed supporters in Juneau on Thursday, offering her most direct response yet to the controversy surrounding the presence of a candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan on the ballot. The candidate, who shares both a first and last name with the Republican incumbent, Senator Dan Sullivan, has fueled concerns regarding voter confusion in a tight Senate race.

"I just want to clear the air. I knew nothing about any other candidates on the ballot except for me and the incumbent. That is all I have ever known about. I am not interested in tricking voters. I know I can beat Dan Sullivan," Peltola stated during the rally. She emphasized that she remains focused on the core issues of her campaign, specifically citing "affordability, affordability, affordability."

Peltola also dismissed the recent scrutiny as "smears and attacks," expressing frustration at the media coverage. "I just feel like I'm dodging bullets left and right, you know? Just, you know, with all the nonsense," she said, adding a pointed question about the integrity of the reporting. "And when did The New York Times become the National Enquirer? Inquiring minds want to know."

The controversy stems from a report by The New York Times, which alleged that Democratic operatives played a role in recruiting Daniel J. Sullivan to the ballot. Both the Peltola campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have explicitly denied these claims. Meanwhile, the incumbent, Senator Dan Sullivan, has repeatedly characterized the other candidate as a "sham" designed to confuse voters and siphon votes away from the incumbent. Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher, has previously maintained that his candidacy is genuine.

The situation has drawn significant legal and political attention. The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit seeking to potentially block the certification of the election results if the incumbent loses due to voter confusion, and it has issued subpoenas as part of a criminal investigation. Additionally, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has ordered a separate state-level probe into the matter to determine if any laws were broken. President Donald Trump has weighed in on the situation, calling for both Peltola and the namesake candidate to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted, asserting that "the Democrats cheated."

While state courts have previously ruled that the other Daniel J. Sullivan may remain on the ballot, the federal investigation continues to loom over the election, which is scheduled for next week.
