The Norwegian Football Federation has called for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, asserting that he no longer possesses the institutional trust required to lead the organization.
"There is no turning back for Gianni Infantino," stated the federation's president, Lise Klaveness, to reporters. "We are going to ask the FIFA president to resign now."
This demand comes after a meeting of the Norwegian federation's governing bodies, which discussed the leadership of the FIFA chief. Infantino, who has been FIFA President since 2016, is currently the only declared candidate for re-election for a fourth and final term next March. Candidates must declare their intention by November 18.
The Italian-Swiss lawyer has faced significant pressure since a plan was revealed last week to open FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. Klaveness added that Infantino "does not have the institutional trust required to lead FIFA in a stable manner in the current climate."
President of FIFA since 2016 and currently the only declared candidate, Infantino must secure a majority of the 211 votes from the organisation's members in order to be re-elected.
