Napoli are grappling with a mounting defensive crisis as Luca Marianucci has become the third centre-back sidelined during the summer period. The club confirmed that the defender sustained a high-grade tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo. Marianucci, who was seen in visible pain before being forced off the pitch, is expected to remain out for approximately two months, keeping him unavailable until after the September international break.
This latest setback significantly complicates Massimiliano Allegri’s preparations for the upcoming season, particularly given the existing limitations within the squad's central defensive options. Alessandro Buongiorno remains unavailable until January as he continues his recovery from knee surgery, while Sam Beukema is still managing a chronic Achilles issue, leaving his availability for the opening weeks of the campaign in doubt.
As a result, Allegri faces a selection dilemma ahead of the season opener against Genoa. Currently, Amir Rrahmani and Rafa Marín stand as the only fully fit recognised central defenders available to the manager, with Mathías Olivera serving as the remaining defensive cover.
