When Brett Tromp faced a last-minute $800 flight cost to watch his son Matthew play in Dallas, the price seemed steep for a single league game. Yet, Matthew’s confident assurance—"Don't worry. Just come. I'm going big tonight"—convinced his father to make the trip. Matthew delivered on that promise, scoring his maiden Major League Cricket (MLC) half-century with four sixes and two fours, single-handedly rescuing the Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) from a precarious 17/2 start.
This performance was not a sudden stroke of luck but the result of a grueling six-month development stint in New Zealand. After struggling to find a high-performance environment while living in Austin, the 21-year-old found himself at a crossroads following the previous MLC season, having played only seven matches across three years. Facilitated by his agent and former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, Tromp joined the Sydenham Cricket Club in Christchurch. The experience forced him to adapt to a demanding domestic summer, where he balanced T20, one-day, and two-day cricket, learning the patience and technique required to excel at a higher level.
Tromp’s athletic background, which included excelling in golf, field hockey, and tennis, provided the foundation for his professional growth. Having moved from South Africa to the United States in 2022 with his twin brother Joshua, Tromp finally found the missing piece of his development in the challenging Christchurch circuit. Upon returning to the MLC, he maintained his momentum, recording scores of 58 not out, 49, 50, and 44, which helped propel LAKR to their first-ever playoff appearance. His unbeaten 58 against the Texas Super Kings was particularly poignant, as it came against the team coached by Fleming, the man who helped facilitate his New Zealand journey.
LAKR coach Shane Watson praised the young batter’s incredible skill, noting that unlocking his potential to face some of the world's best bowlers is a positive development for both the franchise and USA Cricket. Even Kieron Pollard, known for his reserved nature, took time to commend Tromp on his "serious hitting" after a match.
