Malaysian authorities confirmed on Wednesday that they have recovered the remains of all 5 individuals who were aboard a “flying doctor” service helicopter that crashed the previous day. The aircraft went down in a remote region near the Long Lellang airstrip in northern Sarawak, the country’s largest state. The service is a critical resource used to transport medical teams to isolated areas where standard healthcare access is often difficult.
Officials stated that the formal identification process for the pilot and the four medical workers has already begun. While an investigation into the incident is currently underway, authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. It remains unclear if weather conditions were a contributing factor, though the region has been affected by haze caused by forest fires in neighboring Indonesia over the past few weeks.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on Wednesday. He urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds and assured that the government would provide all necessary support and assistance to the affected families. Additionally, the Sarawak state government has pledged to provide cash assistance to the families and has committed to covering the school fees for the victims’ children.
