London Spirit secured their maiden victory of the campaign with a dominant seven-wicket performance against MI London in a high-scoring derby at The Oval. The chase was effectively decided during the Powerplay, spearheaded by 20-year-old South African Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who smashed 64 runs off just 28 balls.
Opening the batting with Jonny Bairstow, Pretorius immediately targeted Trent Boult, highlighted by a massive 106-metre six over midwicket. The pair propelled Spirit to 50 runs in only 18 balls, establishing a 61-run opening stand within the first 25 deliveries. Although Bairstow was dismissed for a brisk 23 off 12, Pretorius maintained his aggressive tempo. He reached his first fifty in The Hundred off 23 balls and accumulated seven sixes before falling to Boult with the team score at 101. Dewald Brevis ensured the momentum remained with Spirit, finishing unbeaten on 37 off 18 to clinch the win with 11 balls remaining.
MI London had earlier posted a competitive 164/5 after a slow start. Openers Will Jacks and James Vince managed 28 runs in the Powerplay against tight bowling from David Willey and Adam Milne. Jacks eventually accelerated to reach a 30-ball half-century, a knock that made him the leading run-scorer in the history of the Men’s Hundred. However, Spirit fought back in the middle overs. James Coles removed Vince for 26, while Jamie Overton claimed two wickets in three balls, dismissing both Jacks for 65 and Nicholas Pooran. Overton later added the wicket of Jason Roy, who was caught behind on review after replacing Sam Curran, who was sidelined due to muscle tightness. Sherfane Rutherford provided a late spark for MI London with a 19-ball 41, but his efforts were ultimately overshadowed by the visitors' commanding chase.
