A sensational bowling display from England fast bowler Jofra Archer saw Southern Brave bowl out London Spirit for 105, keeping their season very much alive with a crucial five-wicket victory at Lord's. Spirit suffered a spectacular collapse at the end of their innings, losing their final five wickets for a mere two runs with eight balls left unused.
After being inserted to bat by Southern Brave captain Chris Jordan, London Spirit found fluent scoring difficult on a tricky pitch, reaching 52 for 2 at the halfway mark. Jonny Bairstow battled hard to anchor the innings, struggling early on for a run-a-ball 25 before eventually accelerating to reach 56 from 40 deliveries. During the innings, Adil Rashid made history by having Liam Livingstone caught at deep cover. Rashid finished with figures of 2 for 17, passing Tymal Mills to become the leading wicket-taker in the history of the men's Hundred competition.
Bairstow's dismissal triggered a rapid slide as both Archer and Marcus Stoinis claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries to wrap up the innings. Archer finished with incredible figures of 4 for 9, while Stoinis continued his stellar campaign with 3 for 17, taking him to the top of the tournament's wicket-taking charts with nine wickets in four matches.
Chasing a modest target of 106, Southern Brave were heavily favored but found themselves in immediate trouble. David Willey struck early, dismissing Ben McKinney for a first-ball duck and removing Nikhil Chaudhary. Jamie Smith briefly seized control of the chase, motoring to 36 and launching a massive six into the scoreboard before falling lbw to James Coles.
Adam Zampa kept things tight through the middle overs and dismissed Moeen Ali, who had joined the Brave squad as an injury replacement for Thomas Rew. When Stoinis was run out at the non-striker's end, Southern Brave were reeling at 60 for 5, still requiring 46 runs from 48 balls. However, the South African pairing of David Miller and Tristan Stubbs came together to steadily chip away at the target. Miller sealed the win with a six, finishing unbeaten on 39 as Brave crossed the line with three balls to spare, ending on 111 for 5.
The victory keeps Southern Brave firmly in contention for a spot in the Eliminator, while London Spirit now face a highly difficult path to reach the knockout stages.
Reflecting on his performance, Meerkat Match Hero Jofra Archer said: "I'm delighted that we got the win today. It's the first time I've got more than two wickets for the tournament. Everyone's been bowling well. We've not been getting huge amounts of wickets but we've definitely been keeping the runs down." On the tense run chase, Archer added: "You always think that it's going to be an easy game, but we seem to always make it hard for ourselves."
