The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued its most critical Level 5 emergency landslide warning for Niijima Island following an intense period of heavy rain. According to reports from the state broadcaster NHK, the volcanic island, situated approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of Tokyo, experienced a record-breaking 381 millimetres (15 inches) of rainfall within the 24-hour period ending Monday.
The extreme weather conditions have extended beyond the island, impacting eastern Japan since early Monday. The JMA has also implemented Level 4 landslide alerts for regions in Chiba and Saitama prefectures, which neighbor Tokyo, as well as parts of central Fukushima prefecture.
Weather officials have cautioned that further heavy rainfall is expected across wide areas facing the Pacific. This instability is attributed to warm, damp air interacting with a rain front that is currently stretching along the main island of Honshu. Authorities have strongly urged residents in all affected areas to remain on high alert for the potential of landslides and other weather-related disasters.
