The Israeli military is currently grappling with a severe shortage of both personnel and essential equipment following three years of sustained regional conflict. According to a report published by the Israeli newspaper Maariv on Friday, the army is preparing to suspend leave for its soldiers as it struggles to maintain operational capacity. The newspaper stated that the force is prepared to override the basic rights of its soldiers and deny them leave due to the critical lack of manpower.
These personnel challenges persist despite the reported dismissal of Lt. Col. A., who served as the Gaza Division’s intelligence officer in October 2023, as the military cited his command responsibility for the position. Beyond personnel, the report highlighted a significant deficit in hardware, noting that the military lacks sufficient tanks and armored personnel carriers. Three years of war have caused extensive wear and tear, with hundreds of vehicles reported damaged.
Financial friction is further complicating the situation. Maariv criticized the current political climate, suggesting that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is cutting funding to the military while the opposition remains mired in internal disputes. These budget constraints have had tangible consequences; on Tuesday, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the army lost a planned procurement of 12 Apache attack helicopters from US manufacturer Boeing due to a lack of budget. This followed a failed attempt by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a routine meeting to secure cooperation from opposition leader Yair Lapid for a military budget increase.
The army has warned that without an immediate increase in funding, it will be forced to halt efforts to restore damaged tanks and armored personnel carriers to service. Additionally, the military indicated that certain ammunition production lines could be impacted. Over the past three years, the Israeli military has engaged in extensive operations, including the war in Gaza that began in October 2023, as well as conflicts with Lebanon and Iran, and ongoing operations in the occupied West Bank and Syria. These conflicts have resulted in significant human and financial costs, though Israeli authorities maintain strict censorship regarding information about their losses.
