The Israeli army has initiated preparations for a significant escalation in the occupied West Bank, which may include the seizure of additional Palestinian refugee camps and the launch of large-scale military aggression. Israeli security officials, as reported by the Israeli news outlet Walla on Sunday, believe that Defence Minister Israel Katz could advocate for a wider aggressive push in the coming days, specifically targeting the northern occupied West Bank.
Officials cited growing friction on the ground as a primary concern, attributing it to the ongoing expansion of illegal Israeli settlements and occupier outposts in the region.
Military raids by Israeli forces and attacks carried out by illegal settlers have intensified across the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023, coinciding with the launch of its war in Gaza.
Earlier, in January 2025, Israel conducted a massive military aggression in the northern occupied West Bank, which resulted in the Israeli army taking control of the Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams refugee camps. These attacks led to the displacement of approximately 32,000 Palestinians from their homes, according to data from the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
Under international law, the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967, is recognized as part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and a fundamental component of the territory of the State of Palestine. The transfer of an occupying power’s population into occupied territory is deemed illegal under international law. Despite these legal provisions, Israel has in recent years accelerated both the expansion of existing settlements and the construction of new ones in the occupied West Bank.
