Former Chelsea first-team doctor Eva Carneiro has responded sharply to Jose Mourinho and John Terry after the pair revisited the 2015 controversy that led to her departure from the club in a new Netflix documentary. During the documentary, Mourinho maintained that Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn were incorrect to enter the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during a 2-2 draw against Swansea City. At the time of the incident, Mourinho was captured on television hurling expletives at the medical duo, shouting, "Hey! And now we play with nine. F**king hell! We play with nine now. F**K off man!" The manager's frustration stemmed from the fact that Chelsea were already playing with ten men following a red card for Thibaut Courtois.
John Terry, also appearing in the documentary, supported Mourinho's perspective, claiming there was an “understanding” that only severe injuries required medical intervention. Carneiro, who took to X to express her frustration, wrote, "11 years on and here we are reliving the worst. Hope they made some money." She further addressed Terry, stating, "We are bound by a medico-legal code of conduct. Genuinely it would be healthy for John Terry to learn the rules of the game. It’s been long enough mate."
To support her actions, Carneiro shared a statement from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine, which emphasizes that medical staff have a duty of care to assess a player when requested by the referee. She clarified that referee Michael Oliver had called them onto the pitch twice, and Eden Hazard had also requested assistance, confirming his need for help through eye contact. "At that point my hands are bound as a medical professional," she noted.
Following the Swansea City match, Carneiro and Fearn were removed from first-team duties. Carneiro left the club the following month and eventually won a £5 million settlement in court. While Chelsea has since apologized, Mourinho has not. The Portuguese manager was cleared by the FA in September 2015 of making discriminatory remarks toward Carneiro. In the documentary, Mourinho rejected allegations that he discriminated against Carneiro, insisting he treated her exactly as he would have treated a male doctor.
