European energy grid operators are actively preparing for a temporary reduction in power generation expected during next week’s solar eclipse. The association representing these operators confirmed that industry participants have implemented measures to ensure electricity continues to flow reliably to businesses and consumers across the continent, an industry body said Friday.
According to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, which represents 40 operators across 36 countries, photovoltaic output could see a decrease of up to 9.7 GW under clear-sky conditions. This shift is expected to create a rapid, yet predictable, change in generation patterns between 19:15 and 21:30 CEST. The association has established a dedicated task force to manage preparations, monitor the event in real-time, and facilitate information sharing.
The impact is expected to be most significant in Spain, where the Moon will completely obscure the Sun, and in Germany. To mitigate risks, operators have opted to avoid scheduling grid outages during the eclipse to maintain maximum operational flexibility. Additionally, control room staff have been briefed, and market participants have been alerted to the anticipated dip in solar output. To further assist with real-time decision-making, local system operators are receiving updated photovoltaic generation forecasts from various weather service providers.
This event marks the first total solar eclipse visible in mainland Europe since 2006. The path of totality is set to move from remote northern Russia, crossing over Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, before reaching the northeastern tip of Portugal. SolarPower Europe noted that the EU had approximately 406 GW of installed solar capacity by the end of 2025, highlighting the scale of the infrastructure being managed during this celestial event.
