The Danish government has summoned the Russian ambassador to address a confrontation in the Baltic Sea, where a Russian warship fired two emergency flares at a Danish military aircraft. According to the Danish armed forces, the incident occurred while one of their Fennec helicopters was conducting a routine photographic operation of a Russian frigate positioned in international waters off the coast of Gedser.
Officials reported that the frigate deployed two flares in the direction of the helicopter, with one passing at close range to the aircraft. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the encounter as a "reckless" act of intimidation. In a statement posted to X, Frederiksen emphasized that such actions, intended to divide and intimidate, would not succeed and that Denmark would not waver in its response.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed concern that Russia is increasingly pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior. He stated that the incident is something Denmark cannot accept. Russia's ambassador has therefore been summoned for a discussion about the incident. This development follows a separate security incident reported by Lithuania, where an allied fighter jet destroyed a drone that had crossed into its airspace from Belarus on Tuesday.
