Cristian Romero has bid farewell to Tottenham Hotspur, confirming his departure to join Atletico Madrid under the management of Diego Simeone. The Argentine defender, who served as captain for the north London club during the previous campaign, moves to Spain for a reported transfer fee of £34.2 million.
Romero’s exit follows a five-year tenure at Tottenham, where he established himself as a central figure in the backline. Despite his contributions, his recent season was hampered by injuries, which complicated the club's efforts to maintain their position in the top flight. His final appearance for the team occurred in April at the Stadium of Light, in a match against Sunderland that marked Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge, resulting in a 1-0 defeat for Spurs.
The club has since moved to bolster its defensive options by signing Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, alongside securing Micky van de Ven on a new long-term contract. Romero, who reached the World Cup final with Argentina earlier this summer—where the holders were defeated 1-0 by Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey—took to social media to share a heartfelt message with the Tottenham faithful.
In his farewell statement, the defender reflected on his time at the club, stating, "Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives." He expressed pride in his achievements, specifically noting the goal he set upon arrival to help the team lift a trophy. While acknowledging that the journey was not perfect, he emphasized his gratitude toward the coaches, teammates, staff, and fans.
Addressing the supporters directly, Romero wrote, "Thank you for loving me, respecting me and making me feel like one of you from day one. I know I wasn’t perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything." He concluded by affirming that while he is leaving, a part of his heart remains in north London.
