For 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory captivated audiences by turning unlikely romances into some of television's most memorable geeky love stories. While fans followed the journeys of Leonard and Penny, Sheldon and Amy, and Howard and Bernadette, the final surprise addition to the show's romantic landscape was the pairing of comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, and his assistant manager, Denise, portrayed by Lauren Lapkus. The two characters began their romance in Season 11 in 2017, bonding over their mutual passion for comic books and eventually deciding to move in together during the Season 12 finale.
For Lapkus, joining the series so late in its run made the prospect of a spinoff six years later entirely unexpected. She notes that she was thrilled to be part of the show during her time in eight episodes out of the 300 total, but receiving the call to star in the new HBO Max production, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, felt like discovering a mint-condition Action Comics No. 1 in a bargain bin. Sussman reflects on the nature of their relationship, noting that Stuart spent many seasons desperate for love before finally finding his match in Denise. Their on-screen chemistry was marked by quirky, geeky affirmations, such as when Stuart proposed they move in together, stating he wanted to do so "more than Galactus wants to devour worlds," to which Denise replied she wanted to do the same "more than Batman ignores the due process of law."
Despite the satisfying conclusion to their arc on the original series, Sussman admits it was frustrating that their relationship was cut short by the show's cancellation, which he jokingly calls "the most Stuart thing to happen." The new spinoff serves to expand their connection, though it places them in an extreme environment: a dystopian, Mad Max-style reality where the universe is falling apart due to a machine created by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter. The series begins with a tense encounter where Denise attempts to rob Stuart, only to realize his identity, as both had previously assumed the other was dead.
According to Lapkus, Denise is still working on the screenplay she referenced during her time on The Big Bang Theory, while navigating a harsh world where people are forced to eat rats to survive. As the show progresses, the duo faces entirely new realities and existence shifts, yet they manage to grow stronger together. Sussman highlights that while the love story originated in the original series, this new project explores many more facets of their bond, allowing the characters to continue their journey in increasingly strange and complex ways.
