Atletico Madrid has officially announced the signing of veteran Argentinian defender Romero, bringing him to the club on a contract that runs until June 30, 2031. The transfer marks the fourth addition for Atletico this summer, following the arrivals of Alejandro Grimaldo, Kang-in Lee, and Morten Hjulmand.
The 28-year-old defender departs north London after a five-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur. In his farewell message to Spurs supporters on Friday, Romero acknowledged that while his time at the club was not without challenges, he leaves with a heart full of memories and enormous pride. During his 156 appearances for Tottenham, he notably earned man of the match honors in 2025 as the club secured the Europa League title, effectively ending a 17-year trophy drought. He also reflected on the fact that his journey included several suspensions.
Romero, a member of the Argentina national team that competed in last month's World Cup final against Spain, joins the Spanish side shortly after the departure of his compatriot Nahuel Molina. Molina, a fellow World Cup-winning defender, recently left Atletico for Serie A club AS Roma in a deal reported to be worth 17 million euros.
