Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has been appointed as the head coach of the Canterbury Women's team. This appointment distinguishes her as the only female head coach currently leading a domestic team in New Zealand for the upcoming summer season. Satterthwaite succeeds Rhys Morgan, who served in the role for six years and guided the side to two Super Smash titles in 2020-21 and 2022-23, as well as a Hallyburton Johnstone Shield victory in 2020-21.
Satterthwaite, who last played for the team during the 2023 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, brings extensive experience to the position. After retiring from international cricket in 2022, she served as an assistant coach for the Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL and was appointed as the female pathway lead at Canterbury in December last year. Her playing career for Canterbury spanned two decades, during which she accumulated 5,147 runs, making her the team's leading overall scorer until recently being overtaken by Frankie Mackay. She remains the top run-scorer for the side in T20 cricket with 2,925 runs. Over a 15-year international career, she represented New Zealand in 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is, notably becoming one of only two players alongside Kumar Sangakkara to record four consecutive ODI centuries.
In the men's circuit, Brendon Donkers has been named the permanent head coach for Canterbury, the defending Plunket Shield champions. Donkers previously served as an interim head coach following the departure of Peter Fulton, who left midway through the last season to manage Middlesex.
Meanwhile, Heinrich Malan has returned to New Zealand to coach Central Districts after concluding his four-year tenure as head coach for Ireland. Malan, 45, has signed a three-year contract replacing previous coaches Greg Hay and Ben Smith. A familiar face in the Central Districts setup, Malan previously led the team to two Plunket Shield titles, a Ford Trophy win, and the 2019 Super Smash crown. Expressing his enthusiasm for the return, Malan stated that he is eager to work hands-on with the squad and help players showcase their skills at the domestic level.
