Aiden Markram has addressed the ongoing speculation regarding the vacant captaincy at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for next year’s Indian Premier League. While many consider the South African T20 captain a natural fit for the role, Markram insisted that he has not focused on the prospect and pointed out that the team has other qualified candidates who could step into the position.
The captaincy role became vacant after Rishabh Pant stepped down in May following a disappointing season where the team finished at the bottom of the points table. Pant has since been traded to the Delhi Capitals in a deal involving Kuldeep Yadav. While Markram is viewed as a frontrunner due to his leadership experience in the SA20 and The Hundred, he remains pragmatic about the decision. "I've got no idea," Markram stated when asked about leading the side. "They can decide whatever they think is best. There's some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I'm not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I'm sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven't been there just yet."
Other potential candidates within the 2026 squad include Australian T20 captain Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, who has previously captained the West Indies. LSG also retains the option to recruit a new leader during the upcoming IPL mini-auction, although availability may be limited. Currently, Markram is leading the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, a format he says he has thoroughly enjoyed despite the unique challenges of the 100-ball game. He credited Jos Buttler for providing valuable support during his tenure as captain.
On the field, Markram recently found a bit of rhythm with a quick 50 at The Oval on Sunday night, though the innings came during a heavy defeat for his side. After starting the season with two consecutive wins, Manchester Super Giants have now suffered three straight losses, leaving them in a position where they likely need to win their remaining three matches to qualify for the knockout stages. Reflecting on his performance, Markram noted that he was disappointed to be dismissed when he did, as the wicket was favorable for a large score, but he remains hopeful that he can carry his newfound form forward.
"It's obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side [is a challenge]. You sometimes think you've snuck five in, and you remember there's still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be. But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I'm thoroughly enjoying it."
