Following a domestic violence incident earlier this year, James Pearce Jr. is expected to avoid jail time regarding the felony charges he faced. Despite this, the NFL issued an eight-game suspension to the Atlanta Falcons player on Friday, marking another significant setback for the team. The organization had already lost linebacker Jalon Walker for the season earlier this month due to a torn ACL in his left knee. Like Pearce, Walker was a first-round draft pick last year.
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the disciplinary action following the team’s 27-7 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos. Regarding the league's verdict, Stefanski stated he would not comment on the length of the suspension or specific details, noting that the team trusts the process currently in place. He emphasized that Pearce continues to work hard on himself and remains a dedicated teammate both inside and outside the team facility.
Because the team anticipated a suspension, they have been intentional with their planning. The suspension is set to take effect on August 30, which allows Pearce to participate in the remainder of the preseason and training camp activities. Stefanski explained that Pearce will continue to play in upcoming games, but once the suspension begins, he will be away from the building. The coach added that both the player and the team have a plan in place to navigate the situation.
The Falcons face multiple challenges as they enter Stefanski’s first season. Beyond filling the roles of two high-investment defensive players, the team is dealing with quarterback depth issues. Michael Penix Jr. is currently recovering from a torn ACL, while Tua Tagovailoa, who is competing for the starting job, has been hindered by a back injury and a sluggish performance on Friday. Furthermore, third-string quarterback Cooper Rush struggled significantly during the preseason opener, throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned 97 yards for a touchdown.
Yet until the league issued its verdict, it was unclear exactly how much time Pearce would miss. Now the Falcons know.
