While acknowledging that she was instrumental in their rise to television fame, Winfrey emphasized that she cannot be held responsible for the political trajectories they chose to pursue years later.
In an interview published in the August 11 issue of Emmy Magazine, Winfrey explained the reasoning behind inviting both men to appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Regarding McGraw, whom she met in 1998, Winfrey noted that she found him to be "so practical, so down to earth, so real." She stated that he was helpful to her personally, which led to her belief that he could assist many others, prompting his debut on her program.
Similarly, Winfrey recalled being introduced to Dr. Oz by Gayle King before his first appearance on her show in 2004. She explained that she valued his ability to explain complex medical information in an accessible way, which she believed would be beneficial to her audience. These contributions to her viewers were the primary factors in her decision to host them, she maintained.
Following their initial appearances, both men went on to host their own successful programs. "The Dr. Phil" show ran for 21 seasons from 2002 to 2023, featuring guests dealing with various personal and social challenges. Meanwhile, "The Dr. Oz Show" aired for 13 seasons between 2009 and 2022, focusing on health, wellness, and lifestyle topics.
In recent years, both figures have become prominent in conservative politics. Dr. Oz currently serves as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the Trump administration. Although McGraw is not a government official, he has publicly endorsed President Donald Trump, including at a 2024 campaign event, and has expressed support for his immigration policies.
Winfrey, who has long been an opponent of Donald Trump, notably endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 Democratic National Convention. During that speech, she highlighted the importance of character, decency, and respect in leadership, urging voters to consider these values when casting their ballots.
