As India prepares for their two-Test series in Sri Lanka, bowling coach Morne Morkel has set clear expectations for the pace attack. While spinners are traditionally favored in Sri Lankan conditions, Morkel believes that fast bowlers can still be match-winners, particularly at the Galle venue. Drawing from his own playing career, where he claimed 12 wickets at an average of 16 across two Tests in the country—including seven in a 2014 victory at Galle—Morkel emphasizes that seamers must remain tactical and aggressive.
India’s current pace unit is characterized by its relative inexperience. Mohammed Siraj serves as the most seasoned member, joined by Prasidh Krishna, who has appeared in seven Tests, and uncapped players Gurnoor Brar and Auqib Nabi. Brar previously gained experience on the island with the India A squad. Morkel highlighted the physical demands of the tour, noting that the combination of intense heat, humidity, and the tendency of the Kookaburra ball to soften quickly after 25 to 30 overs will test the players.
The coach stressed the importance of mindset, urging the bowlers to maintain high intensity during short, sharp spells. By hitting the deck hard and utilizing the breadth of the crease, Morkel believes the bowlers can create consistent pressure. He also pointed out that the team must be prepared for uneven bounce as the match progresses and suggested that being "street smart" with short-pitched deliveries will be vital once the ball loses its shine.
Reverse swing is another potential weapon that Morkel expects to play a role later in the matches, especially as the sea breeze dries out the square in Galle. While recent showers may impact the outfield and delay the ball's degradation, Morkel remains confident that the team's planning and skill will help them adapt. He noted that the primary challenge for the squad, having not played significant red-ball cricket in recent months, will be their ability to stack up overs with consistent intensity.
"It's about how we can stack up overs together with intensity and create that pressure. Because we haven't played a lot of red-ball cricket in the last couple of months, going back into that is going to be a challenge as well."
