The Heisman Trophy winner reportedly felt deeply disrespected by the university's decision to allow sophomore defensive back DJ Pickett to wear his former No. 5 jersey. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, Daniels expressed frustration that he was being treated differently than Joe Burrow, noting that the university has not reissued Burrow's No. 9 jersey since he left the program.
The reaction to Daniels' legal action was swift, with former LSU and Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Breiden Fehoko publicly addressing the situation on X. While clarifying that he meant no disrespect to Daniels as a fellow Tiger, Fehoko stated, "You not on the same level as Joey B."
The context of the jersey controversy was further clarified by former LSU coach Brian Kelly. He explained that he had not previously authorized Pickett to wear the number in 2025 because he had not yet received full approval from Daniels. Kelly noted, "I just wasn't prepared to do it until we got a full commitment from another Heisman Trophy winner. We didn't want to issue No. 9, so you can't treat one differently from the other."
