A Ukrainian drone strike on an industrial facility deep within Russian territory has resulted in at least 13 deaths, according to local officials. The attack targeted the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, located approximately 750 miles, or 1,200 kilometers, from the Ukrainian border. This strike represents one of the deadliest attacks inside Russia since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of the Tatarstan region, confirmed that a drone impacted a hostel, leading to the deaths of nine people. Images released by regional authorities depicted significant damage to the building. The Uzbek consulate reported that seven of the deceased were citizens of Uzbekistan. In response to the tragedy, Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning, and Russian prosecutors have initiated a criminal case alleging terrorism.
Kyiv’s general staff stated that the raid was part of a strategic effort to diminish the military potential of the Russian aggressor. Footage circulating online showed drones flying over the city's Soviet-era apartment blocks, with black smoke rising from the industrial zone on the outskirts of Nizhnekamsk. The Taneco refinery, owned by Tatneft, is one of Russia's most technologically advanced oil processing sites and includes facilities for rubber and petrochemical production.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the remote bombing campaign, asserting that it is an entirely justified response to Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities. He emphasized that the long-range campaign will continue as part of a strategy to weaken the Russian economy and its ability to fund the war. Recent months have seen Ukrainian drones target oil export infrastructure across Russia, including facilities in Siberia, 1,500 miles from the frontline.
The Russian defence ministry claimed to have intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and annexed Crimea. Despite these defenses, Ukraine maintains that it is successfully exploiting gaps in Russian air defense systems. Further developments include reports of Ukrainian strikes on equipment depots in occupied Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as power outages in the Zaporizhzhia region and the Black Sea coastal areas of Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik.
In a separate development, Sweden’s security service, Säpo, announced the closure of a Russian spying operation directed by the SVR foreign intelligence service. The operation allegedly sought to discredit Sweden and influence its decision-making. Three individuals working under diplomatic cover have reportedly left Sweden as a result of the investigation. Meanwhile, Russian artillery strikes in the Kharkiv region resulted in five deaths in the village of Buhaivka, according to Ukrainian prosecutors.
