Ben Jones, the actor widely recognized for his portrayal of the scruffy mechanic "Crazy" Cooter Davenport on the hit sitcom The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at age 84. His longtime wife, Alma Viator, confirmed that the actor passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, following a "massive heart attack."
Sharing the news on Facebook, Viator expressed her deep grief, stating, "I lost the love of my life today. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing rich life." She further noted that the actor "loved and was loved by so many," adding that he would be deeply missed.
Jones became a television fixture through his role in nearly every episode of The Dukes of Hazzard between 1979 and 1985, later reprising the character for the 1997 and 2000 television films. While the role was later portrayed by other actors in subsequent theatrical and direct-to-video productions, Jones remained the definitive face of the character for many fans. His early career included roles in Killer's Three, Together for Days, Smokey and the Bandit, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, and the action-comedy Moonrunners, which served as the predecessor to Dukes. Later in his career, he appeared in the 1998 Oscar-nominated film Primary Colors alongside stars like John Travolta and Emma Thompson.
Beyond his entertainment career, Jones served as a Democratic member of Congress representing Georgia from 1989 to 1993. Following his defeat in a race against Newt Gingrich, Jones filed an ethics complaint against the former Speaker of the House regarding financial impropriety. The resulting investigation led to Gingrich's resignation and an IRS review, which ultimately exonerated him.
Raised in a railroad shack near Portsmouth, Virginia, Jones eventually settled into a life with his wife, Viator, in a log cabin and farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia. The couple shared two children and operated a successful series of tourist attractions called "Cooter's Place," with locations in Nashville, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Luray, Virginia.
