Genoa manager Daniele De Rossi has voiced strong opposition to the current transfer market regulations, labeling the practice of keeping the window open after the season has already commenced as an "abomination." De Rossi aligned his stance with Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini, who previously expressed frustration over the issue following a 3-0 friendly loss to Brighton and Hove Albion. Gasperini argued that it creates significant complications for clubs to begin their campaigns without finalized squads, suggesting that matches should only start once managers have clarity on their full rosters.
De Rossi echoed these sentiments, describing the deadline being set after the second Serie A match as "idiotic" and a "total red tape abomination." The Genoa coach expressed bewilderment that this issue persists despite annual complaints from managers, stating that the situation is "devastating for everyone in the sport" rather than just being limited to Italy. He characterized the ongoing scheduling as a "stupid and wrong situation" that continues to drag on, noting that 2 major leagues have already voiced similar concerns regarding the timing.
The criticism comes during a difficult pre-season for Genoa, who recently suffered a 1-0 defeat to Deportivo La Coruna in the Trofeo Spagnolo. The match saw a decisive goal from Sanchez Rey, which followed a costly error by new signing Mario Mitaj. Furthermore, the transfer market has directly impacted squad selection, with Brooke Norton-Cuffy excluded from the lineup for the match. De Rossi clarified that while the player was physically capable of competing, he was rested due to ongoing market-related matters.
“Let’s say it’s a market issue, so we rested him, but he was perfectly able to play today,” replied De Rossi.
