Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a drone strike targeting a Saudi Aramco refinery in the city of Jazan. Yahya Saree, a military spokesperson for the Houthis, stated that the attack was conducted in retaliation for Saudi drones breaching Yemeni airspace over the provinces of Hajjah and Saada.
Early on Sunday, the Saudi Energy Ministry reported that a fire had broken out at an Aramco refinery facility. The ministry confirmed that the fire was successfully extinguished and that there were no casualties, though officials did not provide a specific cause for the blaze.
The escalation in hostilities extends beyond the Saudi border. A Yemeni government official, Fayed al-Noman, who serves as the assistant undersecretary of the information ministry, reported on Sunday that the Houthis also launched a coordinated missile and drone attack against the Mocha port. This facility is a vital maritime hub for Yemen's internationally recognized government, having been renovated in recent years to facilitate shipping that avoids Houthi-held ports in Hodeida.
There has been no immediate comment from the Houthis regarding the attack on the port. These developments threaten to reignite Yemen's civil war, more than four years after a 2022 truce brought an end to major combat operations in the country.
Simultaneously, diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States remain high. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday, confirmed that an exchange of messages through intermediaries is ongoing with the United States.
However, he clarified that these communications do not constitute formal negotiations. Araghchi stated that negotiations cannot resume until the United States remedies provisions of a memorandum of understanding that it allegedly violated.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for global oil and natural gas supplies, Araghchi noted that discussions with Oman about new maritime routes are in their final stages. He emphasized that an agreement on routes does not guarantee the reopening of the strait, as that remains subject to additional conditions conveyed through intermediaries.
The Iranian position was further reinforced by a statement from Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, the council's secretary and a commander in the Revolutionary Guard. The statement demanded that the United States permanently end its war with Iran and its regional allies, lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports, withdraw military forces from the area, compensate Iran for war damages, lift sanctions, and unconditionally release frozen assets.
According to U.S. Central Command, the ongoing naval blockade has impacted 53 commercial vessels, with two being disabled and two boarded as of Saturday.
In response to the regional security climate, the Pentagon is actively working to accelerate the production of weapons. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated on Saturday that the department is focused on boosting munitions acquisitions to provide the necessary weaponry for warfighters at the pace the threat demands.
A new analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, suggests that the conflict with Iran has significantly depleted U.S. stockpiles of advanced missile interceptors.
Parnell noted that the push for faster delivery is part of a broader modernization effort that predated the five-month-old conflict. The Strait of Hormuz, which was considered an international waterway prior to the war, previously allowed ships to cross without paying fees or tolls. The current diplomatic efforts are intended to restore an earlier agreement between the U.S. and Iran and restart a 60-day clock for negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program.
