Prominent Russian politician Boris Nadezhdin has confirmed he has fled to Paris as the Kremlin intensifies its campaign against political dissent ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for later this year. The 63-year-old veteran liberal, who gained international attention during his long-shot 2024 presidential bid against Vladimir Putin, had remained one of the few public figures in the country to openly voice opposition to the war in Ukraine.
Nadezhdin announced his departure in a video recorded in front of the Eiffel Tower, stating, “Good news: I’m alive and free. Unfortunately, I’m not in Russia for the time being.” He noted that he is currently taking time to assess his future. His exit follows a period of escalating pressure from Russian authorities, including a brief detention last month on accusations of a minor administrative violation shortly after he registered to run in the September parliamentary elections. This incident was widely interpreted as a tactic to intimidate him and jeopardize his candidacy.
Furthermore, the Russian justice ministry recently labeled Nadezhdin a “foreign agent,” a designation that imposes strict reporting requirements, subjects the individual to greater government surveillance, and carries a significant social stigma. In an interview with the independent outlet Meduza last month, Nadezhdin admitted that while he had hoped to stay and participate in the upcoming elections, the mounting risk of imprisonment had become impossible to ignore.
Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian government has pursued an aggressive crackdown on civil society, human rights organizations, independent media, and war critics. While hundreds of opponents have been imprisoned, thousands have fled the country. As the ruling United Russia party attempts to solidify its control in the upcoming state-managed elections, the Kremlin has shown little tolerance for even token opposition, particularly as public fatigue grows over war-related economic pressures and fuel shortages.
