A recent cyberattack has compromised the records of approximately 31,000 individuals listed in Liechtenstein’s register of economic beneficiaries. The breach, which targeted data regarding people associated with companies, foundations, and trusteeships, occurred overnight between Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
The government of the small principality, which sits between Switzerland and Austria and relies heavily on its financial industry, discovered the intrusion on Thursday. In response, authorities took the system offline and implemented measures to secure the database. A specialized crisis unit was established over the weekend to investigate the incident.
According to the government, there is currently no evidence to suggest that any information within the registry was deleted or altered. The register is a key component of the nation's regulatory framework designed to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Liechtenstein, which has a total population of roughly 40,000, is treating the investigation into the breach as a priority.
