The family of 22-year-old Mahmoud Atallah Al-Drimli has finally received a sign of life after nearly 21 months of uncertainty, identifying him in an Instagram photograph posted by an Israeli soldier. In the image, Al-Drimli is shown blindfolded and handcuffed while positioned between two female Israeli soldiers. While the photograph confirms his status at the time it was captured, it has prompted urgent concerns regarding his current health, location, and legal standing.
Al-Drimli went missing on 2 November 2024 during his attempt to return to Gaza City via the Netzarim Corridor, a passage that was under the control of Israeli forces at the time. Prior to this discovery, the family's efforts to locate him through the Red Cross had been unsuccessful.
Reflecting on the discovery, Al-Drimli’s mother described her reaction as a mixture of relief and heartbreak. She expressed gratitude for knowing her son was alive, yet spoke of the pain caused by seeing him in such a vulnerable state. Regarding the soldier's decision to post the image, she remarked that the photos do not humiliate her son, but rather those who chose to take and publish them. His brother, Ahmed, characterized the image as a "glimmer of hope" and issued an appeal to international rights organizations to intervene and uncover Mahmoud's current whereabouts.
The incident highlights a broader issue regarding detainees in the region. According to the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, approximately 9,400 Palestinians were held in Israeli custody as of early July. Advocacy groups continue to report that the fates of hundreds of detainees from Gaza remain unknown, as authorities persistently withhold details concerning their medical conditions and specific places of detention.
