An intensive overnight Russian air campaign struck the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv before dawn on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of nine people and leaving more than 30 others injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the event as a horrific night for the city in a social media statement.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the bombardment involved 35 missiles and 185 attack drones. The country's air defenses struggled to intercept the barrage, with Zelenskyy noting that only one of 27 incoming ballistic missiles was successfully shot down. He attributed this failure to a dwindling supply of Patriot air defense missiles, which remain the country's primary defense against such weaponry.
The strikes impacted five distinct areas of Kyiv, triggering fires that required emergency crews to work throughout the night to rescue residents from damaged apartment blocks. Firefighters were seen dousing gutted structures, while charred vehicles lined the streets and apartment courtyards. Reports from the scene indicated a grim toll, with images showing a covered body near burned-out cars and blood on a debris-littered crosswalk. Explosions began around 1:30 a.m. local time, shattering windows, collapsing roofs, and blowing doors off their hinges in residential buildings.
The Darnytskyi district suffered the highest number of casualties, with seven people killed and 14 injured. In the Solomianskyi district, falling debris ignited a fire at a five-story apartment building, where emergency teams evacuated 35 residents from upper floors; two individuals died in the incident, and several children were among the wounded. Additionally, firefighters extinguished a blaze at a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, while officials reported damage to both commercial and residential properties in two other districts. Lithuania's foreign minister stated that the country's embassy in Kyiv was damaged by nearby missile impacts.
The Russian Defense Ministry described the operation as a large-scale strike targeting military-industrial and logistics facilities. This attack follows a strike two days prior that killed at least 10 people elsewhere in Ukraine, part of what officials characterize as an intensified Russian effort to exploit Ukraine's lack of ballistic missile interceptors.
The shortage of defense systems remains central to discussions between Zelenskyy and President Trump. Following recent talks, Zelenskyy expressed hope for a plan allowing Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot missiles, having also consulted with Lockheed Martin executives. While Trump previously signaled support for this at a NATO summit in Ankara, he noted during a Friday Cabinet meeting at Camp David that no final agreement has been reached, citing the complexity of transferring such technology.
The violence extended beyond the capital, with an airstrike in the southern city of Kherson killing one person and wounding 19. Meanwhile, Ukraine continued its own long-range operations against Russian energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy also confirmed that a sanctioned Russian container ship was sunk in the Black Sea by a Ukrainian drone strike. Russia's state nuclear firm, Rosatom, which owns the ship's operator, claimed the vessel was only transporting frozen food and construction materials.
