Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong has issued a clear warning to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their upcoming Sydney Super Cup encounter in Australia. Despite the match being a pre-season fixture, the 20-year-old insisted that the rivalry between the two London clubs precludes the possibility of a casual atmosphere. Reflecting on his journey, Acheampong noted that facing Tottenham always holds a special significance for him, adding that he finds it particularly rewarding to secure a win against them.
Both clubs are aiming to bounce back after challenging 2025-26 campaigns, which saw both teams navigate through three different coaching changes despite previous silverware in 2024-25. Chelsea finished the season in tenth place, while Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation. The Sydney Super Cup tour has seen varying results for both teams; Chelsea secured a 6-4 victory against the Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday, while Tottenham required a penalty shootout to defeat Sydney FC.
For the upcoming clash, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has opted to field a near-full strength starting eleven. Following an impressive hat-trick off the bench earlier in the week, Joao Pedro has been rewarded with a start. The lineup also features Jamie Gittens on the left flank, along with Cole Palmer and Estevao. Romeo Lavia is set to feature for the first time as he returns to fitness, while Dario Essugo earns a second consecutive start following his recent strong performance. The defensive unit includes Jorrel Hato at left-back, Marco Palestra at right-back, and captain Levi Colwill, with Teddy Sharman-Lowe starting in goal as the only academy representative in the side.
The pair of London sides are set to clash in Down Under in a pre-season encounter, having each faced Australian opposition this week.
The Blues finished in tenth place, going through three different coaches throughout the campaign.
