Indian teenage batting talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the record books on Thursday, July 23, by becoming the youngest player ever to register a half-century in international cricket. The 15-year-old achieved the feat during the opening T20I of the series against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club, surpassing the previous record held by Gibraltar’s Louis Bruce, who was 16 years and 56 days old when he reached the milestone.
Chasing a target of 126 runs, Suryavanshi displayed aggressive intent from the start. Although his opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, struggled to find his rhythm and was dismissed for one run off eight balls, Suryavanshi took charge of the powerplay. The left-handed opener reached his maiden international half-century in just 18 balls during the seventh over of the chase. The milestone was secured after a lofted shot over the bowler's head, where he hustled for a second run to reach the mark.
Upon reaching his fifty, the youngster performed his trademark celebration, forming an 'A' gesture with his fingers. Suryavanshi later explained that the celebration is dedicated to his mother, as her name begins with that letter—a gesture he frequently showcased during the 2026 Indian Premier League. His stay at the crease ended immediately after his milestone when he attempted an off-side lofted shot against a short-of-length delivery from Richard Ngarava. The ball caught a top edge and was safely held by Ben Curran at third man.
Suryavanshi finished his entertaining innings with 50 runs from 19 balls, boasting an impressive strike rate of 263.16. His knock included four sixes and four fours, providing the foundation for India to secure a seven-wicket victory in only 13.2 overs. With this win, India leads the three-match series 1-0, with the remaining two fixtures scheduled at the same venue for July 25 and 26.
