Sussex has officially appointed former Kent head coach Matt Walker as their new head coach, effective November 1. Walker will take over the position from Paul Farbrace, who is transitioning into the role of Director of Cricket. Farbrace has agreed to remain with the club to maintain continuity during this leadership shift.
The appointment follows a rigorous three-stage selection process that evaluated candidates from across the global cricketing community. Farbrace noted that Walker consistently impressed the panel throughout the search, describing him as the clear choice for the role. He praised Walker's reputation, energy, and experience, stating that he looks forward to working with him to build a side capable of competing for trophies.
Walker, whose coaching background includes work with the England men's setup and the Oval Invincibles—now known as MI London—in The Hundred, expressed his enthusiasm for the new post. He noted his long-standing admiration for the club's history and his eagerness to work with the current group of players and staff to build upon the strong foundation already in place.
The change in coaching leadership occurs as the club navigates a period of significant off-season adjustment. Sussex was recently placed into three years of special measures by the ECB following the discovery of a £1.3 million financial deficit. Despite these challenges, the team remains competitive, currently sitting in fifth place in a highly contested Division One.
New Sussex chair Ed Warner, who recently succeeded interim president Sir Rod Aldridge following the resignation of Jon Filby in February, emphasized the importance of the decision. Warner stated that Walker’s track record, combined with the continued involvement of Farbrace as Director of Cricket, provides the club with the necessary leadership, ambition, and experience to move forward effectively.
