A growing protest movement, led by a group calling itself the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), is currently challenging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India. The movement, which has garnered over 20 million followers on Instagram through satire and memes, seeks accountability for systemic issues within the country's education sector. Protesters are specifically demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing concerns over paper leaks, the rescheduling of high-stakes entrance exams, and alleged irregularities in the On-Screen Marking valuation process.
The movement's name stems from a May 15 Supreme Court hearing. During the session, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked that unemployed youth often resort to activism and attack the system like "cockroaches." Founding president Abhijeet Dipke adopted the term, combining it with the ruling party's name to create a parody brand that has since evolved into a serious platform for dissent. Members of the movement, who identify as "cockroaches," have been gathering near New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since June 6 to conduct a peaceful strike.
Participants come from diverse backgrounds, traveling from across the country to join the protest site. Indrija Singh, a retired philosophy professor who traveled 700 kilometers from Allahabad, is among those who have made the protest site their temporary home. The protesters argue that the government has failed to address the futures of millions of students, pointing to stagnant lives and rising suicide rates as evidence of a broken system.
Ashutosh Ranka, the CJP’s national spokesperson, expressed deep frustration with the government's approach to the crisis. He accused the administration of refusing to engage in dialogue, stating that the government prefers to harass, jail, and strip rights from citizens rather than address the systemic failures. As the movement continues, leaders like Dipke remain visible at the site, rallying crowds with slogans against the current leadership. The CJP represents an alternative form of political participation, operating largely outside of traditional party structures to voice grievances regarding unemployment, governance, and a perceived lack of accountability.
