A recent Ukrainian offensive in southwest Russia resulted in the death of one individual and left three others injured, according to local officials. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, the governor of the Samara region, confirmed that 1 child was among the wounded. The strike caused damage to residential homes and apartment buildings, as well as an unspecified industrial site.
Reports from Russian media identified the primary target of the attack as the Syzran Oil Refinery. Images circulating online showed black smoke billowing from the facility, which is owned by the oil and gas corporation Rosneft. Located approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the border, the refinery has been a recurring target for forces from Kyiv.
In a separate incident, Yuri Slyusar, the governor of the Rostov region, stated that a tanker sustained damage during a drone strike in the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal. Slyusar clarified that the vessel was empty at the time and there is currently no risk of an oil spill.
These ongoing drone operations against refineries and critical infrastructure have led to widespread fuel shortages and rationing across various Russian regions, forcing motorists to endure lengthy waits at gas stations. In response, Moscow has ramped up its bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, highlighting the vulnerability of Ukraine to ballistic missile attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has characterized these strikes on Russian energy assets as a campaign of “long-range sanctions.” He maintains that these actions are a direct response to Moscow’s refusal to end its four-year invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Sunday that it conducted strikes against the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk within Ukraine’s Odesa region, though Ukrainian officials have yet to provide a comment on these claims.
