The Nigerian government announced on Friday that a group of students, who were abducted by Muslim militants in the southwestern state of Oyo back in May, has been successfully rescued. Government spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the rescue operation but did not provide the specific number of students who were freed.

The incident originally occurred on May 15, when authorities reported that more than 40 individuals had been taken from two different secondary schools. According to the latest update from Onanuga, the security operation also resulted in the arrest of eight militants.

The kidnapping event in Oyo state was viewed by officials and observers as a notable escalation of the ongoing security crisis within the country. This assessment stems from the fact that the majority of such mass abductions in Nigeria have historically been concentrated in the northern regions, making the incident in the southern state particularly concerning.
