US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly on "resignation watch" following Republican setbacks in the midterm elections. According to a report by The Independent, allies of the top diplomat anticipate his departure from the administration to facilitate a campaign for the 2028 presidential race.
A source close to Rubio suggested that stepping down is a logical step, arguing that effectively managing a nationwide political campaign while simultaneously holding a high-ranking cabinet position is not feasible. Furthermore, insiders indicate that Rubio intends to distance his political image from the ongoing war in Iran, effectively leaving the responsibility for the conflict to US President Donald Trump. Sources noted that Rubio maintained a "quieter role" regarding military operations throughout his tenure, despite possessing the statutory authority to oversee foreign policy.
Beyond Rubio, other Republican sources have suggested that as many as five Cabinet members may be planning to exit their posts before the new Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January. The potential departures are reportedly aimed at avoiding upcoming committee investigations and possible impeachment efforts.
The administration has formally rejected these claims. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle characterized the reports as "baseless, false conspiracy theories," asserting that President Trump has successfully "assembled a united team focused on his America First agenda." Similarly, State Department Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson dismissed the coverage as "completely baseless fake news from made-up anonymous 'sources'."
